Team Background

Malcolm Turner, Project Director

Malcolm has led and managed Bridging the Gap for over six years and has full responsibility for the day-to-day operational and delivery aspects of all projects and programmes. In a previous role he has undertaken adult outreach guidance work in Barnsley, South Yorks.

His qualifications include a Post Graduate Diploma in Careers Guidance & British Psychological Society 'Occupational Testing and Personality Profiling'. He recently completed an MSc in Local Economic Development.

Having been unemployed for two years, at the height of the last recession in the early 90's, Malcolm has a particular empathy with the unemployed.

Malcolm is keen to offer additional services in the fields of Career Guidance and Psychometric Testing and with the support of the Board of Directors he is actively seeking new funding sources. Married with two grown up children he and his wife now live in rural Somerset. He enjoys photography, walking and watching all forms of sport, particularly now that he is too old to play football. Malcolm supports both the Leicester football and rugby teams and watches their games whenever he can.

Matthew Clement, Outer City Team Leader

Working in the north of Bristol for over 5 years for Bridging the Gap (BtG) concentrating on Southmead and Lawrence Weston, additionally a significant proportion of my clients have been BME clients who we have helped to gain employment, work experience, professional qualifications and training.

I have taught at a local secondary school, previously to teaching and BtG I was a Career Guidance Adviser and worked with 16-19 year olds and unemployed adults in Hampshire. I'm currently completing post-graduate research combating social exclusion.

Carmen Hutchinson, Community Support Worker

Carmen considers herself to be a very conscientious person, full of good humour and the office is quiet and spark-less without her. She loves cooking and eating a variety of foods. Her experience spans over 19 years of working in the private, public and voluntary sectors, ranging from financial management to training and development.

She was the first Job Club Leader in the St. Pauls area - assisting and motivating long-term unemployed people back into employment and training. Carmen sits on the Board of a number of voluntary sector organisations. She has a BSc in Business and Psychology and has almost completed her NVQ Level 4 in Advice and Guidance.

Rachel Benson, Community Support Worker

I am a mother of three children and a grandmother of five. My interests outside of work include walking, cooking, gardening and going to the gym.

Anne Day, Community Support Worker

Anne works as part of the team in the south and west of the city. Prior to joining BtG I worked as a Welfare Rights Advisor in South Bristol, with particular responsibility for working with Sure Start in Hartcliffe and Withywood and training volunteers. This experience in advocacy and providing advice, information and support to often marginalised communities on a wide range of subjects has given me the awareness and skills necessary to work with people facing barriers to gaining employment.

I am qualified to NVQ Level 4 in Advice and Guidance and have an NVQ Assessors certificate. Recent areas of study have included counselling skills and adult learner support, which I hope to build on in the future.

I have linguistic skills in Urdu and Punjabi and have a central role at BtG for providing any additional language support through sister agencies. This reflects BtG’s commitment to effectively communicating for a positive outcome through career building advice, training, and employment oriented initiatives.
